Miami Valley Nonprofit Collaborative: A Strategic Collaboration That Works

Bob Reynolds, CPA, CGMA

Miami Valley Nonprofit CollaborativeIn March 2019, Brady Ware and fellow founding partners, the Dayton Better Business Bureau, and the Life Enrichment Center, came together to help the Miami Valley Nonprofit Collaborative (MVNC) incorporate and begin operations as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Fueled by a shared vision of building stronger nonprofits to build stronger communities, we hit the ground running to begin the work of developing programs and services to communicate, convene and create resources that build the capacity of nonprofit agencies and the effectiveness those who work and volunteer in them.

Certainly, we had no idea at the time that our first anniversary as a public charity would coincide with the beginning of the pandemic and one of the most challenging of times for many nonprofit organizations. Like everyone else we pivoted to adapt to these challenges and fortunately were able to weather the storm, and dare I say, we came through it all with a renewed focus and commitment to supporting the nonprofit community. MVNC provides an annual suite of program offerings that are focused in three key areas: Trending Issues impacting Nonprofit Organizations; Operational Excellence; and Leadership Development.

MVNC is currently working on its 2022 suite of Trending Issues programs. These offerings are focused on providing information on the issues of the day impacting your organization and guidance on how to respond to them. Some of the sessions offered this year covered topics like Engaging a Remote Workforce, Inclusive Leadership and Nonprofit Mergers. We encourage you to register for MVNC’s panel discussion on December 3, 2021, on Fundraising Training for Board Members. We often hear from nonprofit leaders that they need greater participation from their Board members in raising funds.

MVNC’s Core Excellence Series is a six-session program designed to help leaders address the 6 critical components needed for professional management of a nonprofit. This series focuses on the development of actionable strategies to enhance your board structure, assess financial sustainability, strengthen your strategic plan and goals, staffing, marketing, and fundraising. The remaining fall sessions for the 2021 Core Excellence Series are available for $35 per session.

MVNC’s Developing Nonprofit Leaders Series is a special 6-month program designed to develop the leadership skills of new or experienced Program Managers/Directors who supervise other program staff and/or volunteers. Program coordinators who do not currently supervise others but who wish to advance into management roles will also find these courses helpful to develop the skills needed to effectively lead others within their agencies. To learn more about our 2022 Developing Nonprofit Leaders Series contact Jenny Warner at info@mvnonprofitcollaborative.org.

Although there are many training and development opportunities available for nonprofits, few are as affordable and of the quality of those provided by the Miami Valley Nonprofit Collaborative. The following comment was provided by a local nonprofit leader and program participant:

“You are doing great work. MVNC has become quite robust in its offerings.”
~ Peter Benkendorf, Founder & Catalyst, The Collaboratory
