Recap: Becoming an Extraordinary Nonprofit Leader

10 Essential Qualities and Strategies for High-Impact Nonprofit Leadership

Brady Ware’s recent Take Five Nonprofit Conference kicked off with a powerful, honest conversation on what it truly means to lead. Keynote speaker Joel Kessel challenged attendees to move past the “myth of the fixed title” and embrace a more dynamic, intentional definition of leadership.

10 Essential Qualities and Strategies for High-Impact Nonprofit Leadership

Defining Extraordinary Leadership

Leadership isn’t about the corner office; it’s about intentionally influencing individuals. As Joel pointed out, we are all leaders—whether we are managing a multi-million dollar nonprofit, leading a specific initiative, or simply leading ourselves in our daily choices.

One of the most striking takeaways was Joel’s reflection on his own career: “People don’t leave organizations; people leave people.” This serves as a vital reminder for nonprofit professionals that the health of an organization is built on the strength of its individual relationships.

The 10 Qualities of an Extraordinary Leader

Joel outlined ten essential qualities that define the path from ordinary to extraordinary.

  1. Character: Who you are when no one is looking.
  2. Confidence: The self-belief that you are awesome, built through clarity and competence.
  3. Charisma: The choice to help others feel fantastic about themselves through praise and encouragement.
  4. Competence: The decision to get a task done and do it exceptionally well.
  5. Collaboration: The understanding that “we” is more important than “me.”
  6. Conflict: The perspective that differences are okay and disagreements are normal.
  7. Commitment: The focus on doing hard things better and pushing through distractions.
  8. Curiosity: Being a “Chief Curiosity Officer” by asking open-ended questions.
  9. Connection: The relational magnetism of being more interested than interesting.
  10. Courage: The mindset required to step into challenging situations.

Overcoming the Obstacles to Growth

It isn’t enough to simply list qualities; leaders must face the obstacles that block progress. Joel also identified 10 Obstacles, one of which was Chaos—the disruption of rhythms and routines—as a primary barrier. In the nonprofit world, chaos is a constant, but extraordinary leaders find the “first domino,” the one thing that makes everything else easier, to keep their team aligned and rowing in the same direction.

Taking the Next Step

The session concluded with a call to action: be intentional. Whether it is leaning into healthy conflict or building performance-based trust, the goal is to move the needle. As Joel asked the audience, “What’s one thing you can do to go from a 7 to an 8 in the next 30 days?”

By focusing on consistency and humility, nonprofit leaders can transform their impact, ensuring their missions thrive long into the future.
