Brady Ware Nonprofit Team Spotlight: Missy Behymer

I joined Brady Ware in 2005 after spending 12 years in consumer finance. I was looking for a more fulfilling job, so I went back to college and decided to become an accountant. I knew I wanted to work for a regional firm for the flexibility and reduced travel, so I took advantage of Wright State University’s Alpha Beta Psi program, which allowed us to meet all of the area firms. I interviewed with Brady Ware and immediately knew that this was the right place for me.

As an auditor, I enjoy the team-oriented nature of my work. Looking toward the future of the firm, I’m currently running an internal pilot program for management training. I believe in having focused training, and I think it’s important to ensure our people develop the soft skills necessary to become effective leaders.

What I love most about my job is that almost all of my clients are nonprofit organizations. They either take care of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities or they focus on arts and human services. They’re all mission driven, and they’re very passionate about what they do.

The Secret to Success

Warren Buffett says his secret to success is four words: do what you love. I feel like I live the best of both worlds: I am a shareholder in the firm, and I help my clients. Day in and day out, I’m able to watch our staff grow and learn while also helping our clients succeed. And, since our clients’ motivation is to do good for the community—for the good of all—I get to be a part of them accomplishing their missions. It doesn’t get better than that.

A big part of helping nonprofit organizations is volunteering on their boards. When you serve on the board of an organization you’re passionate about, you receive more in return that what you give. I like being part of the community helping a cause move forward.

I currently serve on the board of TAG Community Living. The idea behind TAG is to develop robust communities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, where they can live together and have a central location for activities. TAG believes this could be a better model than the current standard in the state of Ohio, and I’m deeply invested in helping them bring about this change.

Personal Philosophy

I might not be able to change everything bad in this world, but I can be an example of how I want the world to be. I can only control what I think, what I believe, and how I react. There’s no such thing as control for anyone but ourselves. And I choose to put my energy into making my community—and the lives of the people in it—better.
