About the Chicago Business Community

The Korean business community in Chicago is one of the largest and most established Korean commercial networks in the Midwest. Historically, its center was Albany Park on the city’s Northwest Side, particularly along Lawrence Avenue between Kedzie and Pulaski. That corridor became known as “Seoul Drive” and, during the 1980s and 1990s, supported a dense concentration of Korean grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries, travel agencies, insurance firms, entertainment venues, and other small businesses. At its peak, Albany Park had hundreds of Korean-owned businesses and served as the social and commercial center of Korean life in the Chicago area.

Food and retail remain highly visible parts of the Korean business presence, but the community is economically diverse. Korean entrepreneurs and professionals are active in accounting, law, insurance, health care, real estate, construction, logistics, manufacturing, technology, wholesale trade, and international commerce. The size of the metropolitan Korean population also gives these businesses access to a substantial local customer base while many have expanded beyond serving only Korean-American consumers.
